Description: DAFBY developed out of the Youth Democracy Project which started in 2000 and is a partnership between the Council and the Youth Service. DAFBY acts as a representative body for young people aged 13-19 in Bath & North East Somerset. It helps run the UK Youth Parliament elections held annually to elect the authority Member of Youth Parliament. The project works to the main agenda of the United Nations’ Rights of the Child, particularly in ensuring that young people have the right to be heard and have their opinions taken into account in decisions that affect them. This means young people work with a number of organisations including the Connexions Service, the Local Strategic Partnership and other strategic planning groups. The core group in DAFBY is about 40 young people aged 13+ from across the authority. It also supports young people in a number of areas and organisations including developing Youth Forums across the authority and supporting Secondary School Councils by providing training and advice using peer trainers. Participants have been involved in organising and taking part in a number of workshops and conferences around issues that young people are interested in including Healthy Living, Transport and Arts and Dance. Young People are supported in their achievement through the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, Millennium Volunteers and through portfolios of achievement. Entrance is free and transport is provded from across B&NES.
