Reach - help put an end to homophobic bullying
Homophobic, gendered and cyberbullying can have a devastating effect on young people's lives. We can all do something to stop it.
Reach is an exciting project being run by the award winning charity EACH and is funded by The Big Lottery until 2014.
One of the aims of the project is to design a toolkit of lesson plans and sources of information to help adults who work with children and young people understand and deal with homophobia and homophobic bullying in schools and children's centres. The experiences of young people in schools and other young people's settings will inform the content of the toolkit which may include
• PowerPoints or short films for use in assemblies or tutorials
• Template lesson plans
• Clear information defining the legal responsibilities of educational establishments and agencies
• Examples of established, successful peer mentoring groups with set-up guidance
How can young people get involved?
The Reach young people's group meet weekly (every Thursday from 5 - 7pm) in Bath, where they are given the opportunity to take part in training in a variety of media to create innovative and creative resources for teachers to use in the classroom. Participating young people will have the opportunity to attend a rolling programme of courses, including
• Script writing
• Short filmmaking
• Music production
• Animation and photography.
As well as these practical skills, the guiding aim is to develop the life skills and confidence of the young people involved and help them to take a positive stand against discrimination and bullying. Through the collection of evidence and the keeping of a log, the project will also enable young people to complete the National Youth Agency's Challenge and Lead qualification at Level 2 or 3. The project also offers young people the opportunity to become a trained researcher and take part in information gathering events. At the end of the project the resource will be sent to all the schools in the area of delivery which includes Bath and North East Somerset, North Somerset, South Gloucestershire and Bristol.
